115 HP Mercury Outboard 1988 water pump

I have taken off all bolts ( seven so far) from the lower unit. And still the lower unit will not drop down so I can service water pump.<br /><br />I have hammer on the unit so hard I have broken off a piece of fin.<br /><br />Help???<br />Why would the lower unit drop??

First thing. stop beating with the hammer. now, what motor are you working on ? what year, what size ?

1988 Mercury 115HP 4 cycle 6 cylinder Serial No. 0B32855.<br /><br />Why would the lower unit drop?

Remove the zinc (trim tab under the cav plate). When you do this, there will be an allen screw that must be removed. A Manual is a must for this job. Otherwise, I would advise you to order your replacemnent l/u soon, so you don't have a long wait without one.(JK, but)...<br />They do get stuck sometimes, and can be a chore even when nothing but rust is holding them.<br />Try a brief crank on the starter in gear, to see if the driveshaft will let-go. When the driveshaft lets go, it's a good idea to have an old piece of styrofoam under the skeg to prevent damage by the sudden release.

I found a 5/8" bolt head instead of the allen screw you mentioned,still no joy!<br /><br />Help!

Did not find a allen key for this model.<br /><br />At least not on my engine. Prehapes its not a 1988.<br />Any way tried your suggestion . And resume my slightly tapping all sides of the engine to release the LU. Still no joy !<br /><br />Anybody got any constructive suggestions?<br /><br />Best Regards,<br /><br />MJH
