I have a 1986 Black Max 200 Mercury outboard with the following peculiar problem. Upon first trying to start the motor it will crank several times and after releasing the key it will keep cranking even if I pull the key out. The only way to stop it is to pull the positive battery cable off. It finally starts by reconnecting the positive cable, I mean it simply cranks by reconnecting the cable until it starts . After I run the boat it can start and shutoff repeatedly very well and always starts on the first try with no excessive cranking. Does this sound like an ignition switch problem that a new boater can fix or troubleshoot easily? If it is the switch could it be sticking?
As well, as a separate question, given that this boat is an 18 foot Baja, what would be a good general all around use prop? I currently have a 21" aluminum prop that is pretty good for waterskiing but not so good for top speed, and a 25" SS prop that is great for top end but terribly slow to plane. Before I spend a lot of money on a prop that does not suit my needs any suggestions from anyone that would have an idea on what is best? I would love a prop that is allows the boat to plane quickly, and is reasonably good on top end. I thank you in advance for your reply.

Re: Merc 200 ignition problem/prop selection

Your starter problem does not sound like a ignition issue. The starter circuit is a relay/solenoid that leads high power to the starter. Once you release the key the starter stops. If not - which appearantly is the case - your relay/solenoid probably 'hangs' as it keeps leading power through. Can't say why it changes after first start, but once fixed it should work normal under all conditions.

You're pretty close on the prop issue. You know the basics about pitch (hi/lo and resulting performance) but have to consider the max recommended rpm range at WOT.

An inch in pitch equals 200 rpm so the step between yours is 800 rpm! The mid value 23" may be the right choise.

If you like to try the estimating spreadsheet go here where you'll find other prop info as well.

Hello,
I have 18foot Baja ss with a merc 200.
I am running a 19 pitch stainless and have great skiing power and am getting about 57mph top end.
I am also at 5300 feet up sea level.
I was told running a 21 pitch I would gain more top end speed but lose the yank out of the hole.
I hope this helps.
What model Baja do you own?
