Pro,
The linkage is the most aggravating thing as I remember. It is a devil to get started when you go to put it back together if you dont have a friend to help you hold the lower unit up.

Good luck,
BK

What HP – Mine is a 200 – No real problems, get the complete water pump kit. locate correct part# at www.mercurypartsexpress.com there are parts diagrams there as well , make sure you have the RTV to seal the water dam in front of the pump. Also while you are changing and ordering parts get a set of thermostats as well only takes a few min to change them as well. Hardest thing I found was taking it apart the first time after previous owner had neglected changing . Also don’t forget the bolt on the underside by the trim tab.

Good Luck

RFish ;)

Just ensure when all the work is done that you don't have to force the leg home to mate the surfaces. If everything is as it should be the lower unit and the leg will surface contact evenly. If it doesn't then something is amiss or not aligned.
Once you have done it once you will never look back.

Andy

Once you have done it once you will never look back

Still can be a real *(^%#&&@#^ if you are alone when sliding the gearcase back into place.
Tip - have a pair of pliers in your shirt pocket to twist the driveshaft with (to align the splines), as you slide the gearcase into final position.

   Pliers

By the way AndyL is absolutely right you shouldn’t need to use nuts and bolts to pull together everything should fit nice and smooth no binding.

RFish ;)

Yes, pliers.
If the splines on the driveshaft & your crankshaft aren't lined up (and for me, they never are on the first stab at it), you can lower the gearcase just enough to get a grip on the driveshaft with the pliers. Give it a little twist and try to inset again. This is much easier than lowering the gearcase far enough so you can get enough of a grip on it to turn by hand. (worked for me this AM on a 4 1/2" merc).

Profish02, I hate to start an argument with other posters here, but your engine might have a spring loaded pin on the top of the driveshaft (this spring/pin pre-loads the vertical gearcase bearings by pushing on the cranckshaft). If it has this pin, the gearcase will not seat easily back onto the tower. You will have to use the side nuts to very gently seat it.

Rather than turn anything with pliers the preferable method is turn the flywheel "clockwise" until the spines engage. One other note, DON’T lube up the spines thinking it will help use a very light film and NONE on the top as too much lube can create a vapor lock with the top of shaft fitting into the crank which will load up the lower unit bearings. You also might want to get a Mercury repair manual as all of this is actually in there.

RFish ;)

Hmmm, I'm starting to laugh now.
V-6 gearcase, by yourself, turning the flywheel by hand while holding the gearcase in position with the other hand. You must have alot more reach than me (and I'm 6'6"+) :D :D :D

I assumed that the original poster would have someone helping him, Although the last time I did mine I did do it alone and did turn the crankshaft to align the splines.

:p :p :p

Re: 1993 Merc blackmax waterpump

I just changed the water pump in my 150 Mariner and I did not have to use pliers! I put the unit into fwd gear befor removing the lu. When it is time to reinstall the lu all you do is turn the prop to reingage the drive assy. :)

Re: 1993 Merc blackmax waterpump

Great tip W.A.
Never thought of that before because I always seem to be alone when doing this job, so I remove the prop to make the l/u lighter (4 blade SS Lazer = heavy).
You could probably turn the propshaft by hand though (but if not, I could always use my pliers :D )
