I have a 1986 Mariner 30EL that keeps stalling when going at trolling/idle speeds. It runs fine if I open it up. I have replaced all fuel lines, pumps, filters, etc. When it does quit it will not start again until I take the engine apart enough to open the bowl. Once I do that it will start fine until it quits again (the bowl gets empty). Again, if I open it up after I physically open the bowl it runs fine. If you think doing a rebuild will correct the problem just let me know. Any other suggetions would also be grateful.

Thanks....

Re: '86 Mariner 30EL - Stalling Issue

Hi I have a 30AM 1980 Mariner that had a similar type problem that may be the same cause.

I found after a while at low speeds it would die and be impossible to start again. It turned out to be the float valve sticking and over-filling the carburettor.

I discovered it by noticing after it happened and the engine wouldn't start, squeezing the priming bulb caused fuel to spurt out the carburettor over-flow.

When I saw that I firmly tapped the carb and it cured it and the engine started again. Since then I stripped the carb and squirted carb cleaner through the valve several times. The problem never came back.

Hope this helps!

Dan.
