How do, people? I've just spent most of the summer rebuilding a 1970 DUO deep v . it has a mercury (500) 50hp mercury outboard on it . a little under powered if you ask me .anyways my problem is the controler that mounts to the boat by the drivers seat . the cables are sticking & the wiring is shot , shorts & crumbling wires all over the place . the controler say's mercury right on the side, thier are two levers & cables , one is for shifting gears f/n/r . the other is the throttle. the wiring harness has one big round female connector on the end that plugs into the outboard motor on the left hand side .If ayone here has one to sell or knows a boat salvage yard that might have one it would be greatly appriciated . it's a 20' boat so the cables have to be aleast 16' i think , haven't mesured them yet . Thanx in advance , skippy D

Re: mercury controls

If all else, I have a good referance on someone who should have that used part. I would give you his name and number, but some stuborn administrator wanna be wont allow solicitating for sell, although, he would advertise ebay.
If you really want to know this guy's number, email me at greasemonkeyozi@yahoo.com.
P.S. If you want to know what I mean about solicitating for sell, I'm the guy that posted "I need a prop" a couple of hours ago. What a jerk.

Re: mercury controls

Hello Harry

I have a 650 Merc around the same age as your 50, the small lever that is on the right side of your controls is a Throttle advance and is only used when starting the engine. The big leaver acts as both gear shifter and throttle. When the big lever is straight up and down it's in neutral, as you move it forward it first changes the gear to forward and as you continue to move forward it acts as a throttle. It works the same in reverse.

Hope i helped you out a little.
