Got a 71 Merc 800. Been running poor, kicks in sometimes. Tested the rectifier; one of the leads from the stator had good continuity, the other had very high resistence. Should the engine be able to run at all in this senerio?

Re: Damaged Rectifier?

all rectifier does is convert ac to dc.
one side charges battery, other sends
signal to tach.

MELLOWYELLOW:

I HAVE AN 3.4L MARINER 1990.THIS ENGINE HAS ONLY ONE TYPE OF RECTIFIER/REGULATOR ALL IN ONE MODULE.

1- HOW CAN I PROTECT THE VOLT. REGULATOR FROM BRAKE OUT? SOME FRIEND TOLD ME THAT IF I REMOVE THE BATTERY TERMINAL WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING, THE REGULATOR MAY HURT.
2- IF THE TACHOMETER DOESN´T WORK MEANS THAT THE REGULATOR IS NOT CHARGING THE BATTERY PROPERLY? (I´M SURE THAT TACHOMETER IS IN GOOD CONDITIONS)
3- WEAK BATTERY MAY HURT THE VOLT. REGULATOR? (SO, I MUST TO CHARGE BATTERY SEPARATELY WITH BATTERY CHARGER?)

THANKS FOR YOUR ATTENTION

CARLOS SCHEMEL
VENEZUELA

Re: Damaged Rectifier?

your friend is right Senor.... good thing they
only cost $35.
BTW, I know this to be true for the 70's motor
posted here, but 1990 prob. has a lot more
electrical "boards" that can fry at same time.
keep this in mind.
weak volt doesn't hurt battery, it drains it.
a good rectifier will charge it automatically.
good luck,
M.Y.
