DURABILITY OF 3.4L MERC

THIS QUESTION IS FOR MERC 3.4L EXPERTS...
MANY PEOPLE RECOMMENDED ME NOT TO ACCELERATE THE 3.4L OVER 4500 RPM...WHY? THEY TOLD ME THAT DESIGN OF ENGINE IS ONLY PURE POWER AT LOW ENGINE RPM...MORE OVER, IF I ACCELERATE OVER 5000 RPM FOR MORE THAN 5 MINUTES MY ENGINE WILL HURT...BECAUSE... OVERHEAT, OR POOR LUBRICATION AT HIGH RPM´S.
I´M NOT CLEAR ABOUT THAT... I LOVE HIGH SPEED..
WHAT´S THE REAL SITUATION OF MY ENGINE?
WHICH IS THE LIFE TIME OF MY ENGINE? 1500 HRS? SAME LIFETIME OF OTHER ENGINE? EX 200 HP MERC?
I´VE SEEN THE INTERNAL BLOCK (CYLINDER WALLS) AND FOUND SPECIAL METAL COAT?(CHROME WALLS) THIS ENGINE IS DIFFERENT FROM OTHERS?
WERE CAN I FOUND ADDITIONAL TECHNICAL (TECHTIPS)INFORMATION FOR THIS ENGINE..
THANKS FOR YOUR KIND ATTENTION.

SALUDOS DESDE VENEZUELA

CARLOS S.

Eduardo, take it easy.... I run mine wide open for miles in these Poker Runs on my lake... That 3.4L motor is the best motor Mercury has made, for durability. With 6 carbs on it, it is sometimes very tricky to get running smooth, but with that HUGE block, it can take a lot of abuse. I am seeing more and more of them around my area. When I bought mine in 1984, there were only 4 in Texas. The Mercury dealers around the Dallas/Ft. Worth did not even have factory manuals for it. I was forced to buy a set of Mercury Manuals ($430.00 US) and learn on my own. It does have chrome sleeves in it, but that is not a problem if you keep that motor clean by decarboning it often. I truly love these motors. When you sit a 3.4 block on the bench next to the 2.5 or 3.0 block, it makes you wonder how they get so much horsepower out of those little aluminum blocks. I have many motors in my fleet, and I have burned pistons out of the 2.5L(200, 225EFI) because they are much smaller and CANNOT take or disapate the heat as good as that big old 3.4L. I am currently trying to buy some used ones as I run across them. They are quite expensive to rebuild ($3000.00 in parts for complete rebuild plus 2 sleeves) but it was money well spent. If taken care of, I think the 3.4 lasts twice as long as the 2.5 (200,225,250). My 3.4 is currently on a 23' Chris Craft Scorpion Center Console (Heavy boat) and I turn a 23 pitch chopper style prop at a Maximum of 4800 RPMs, which equates to 62 MPH. I think 5000 RPM's is a bit much for this motor. You need to get a higher pitch prop to knock down a little bit of RPM's and you should pick up some more speed. The only thing that worries me is, you may have a problem getting parts down there(I am guessing). I can get everything here I need through the Mercury Parts Express website, in the States. Ebay has been selling some good and blown motors too. Anyway, Keep it clean and I will take you anywhere with your Hair on Fire......... :D  :) :p
