Hi

I have a 2 stroke, 3 cylinder, oil injected, 60hp Mariner serial number 9537575, I premix rather than using oil injection.

Being new to boating, I dont know a great deal about boat engines, I am wishing to learn therefore I am looking at attempting to service the engine myself to also help keep costs minimal.

1.Does anyone know where I can purchase a manual.

2.In the absence of a manual what filters should I be looking for that would need replacing on my engine.

3.How do I top up the gear oil, I believe it fills from low down on the gearbox, do I need any special tools for forcing the oil through and would I need to drain existing oil or can I just top it up. Is there a way of checking the level through the breather. The oil has not been replaced for at least 2 years so would it need replacing?

4.Other than spark plugs, filters, gear oil is there anything else that I should be addressing during a general service, new impeller fitted month or so ago so thats OK.

Thanks for help - this is my second post and like to say what a helpful informative board, excellent.

There must be a technical bookshop somewhere in the UK.Go to an automotive parts place & ask there.they probably wont sell manuals but might be able to point you in the right direction. All Blacks Rugby World Champions...has a nice ring to it :p :p :D

Replying to your gear oil question; Drain and replace your gear oil minimum once a season. Oil is cheap and gears are not. This way you can monitor for gear and bearing wear in the form of fine metal filings in the oil. Also monitors the condition your lower end seals. If they are worn (And they CAN go VERY quickly if a little fishing line gets behind the prop) the oil will show up as milky goo. I found that after removing both the fill and vent plugs and draining the oil, I fill an oil can (the type with a thumb pump) with the fresh gear oil and put a short piece of rubber tube on the spout so it will fit the fill hole on the o/b, the job goes very cleanly and effort free. When the oil comes out the vent(the top hole)the level is correct. Replace the vent plug first then remove the spout from the bottom (fill) hole and quickly replace the fill plug.
Never just "top up" the oil. If it is low, it is leaking out, and if it is leaking out, water is getting in.
I hope that I have expressed this clearly. Sometimes what I think is quite clear appears as gobbally goop to others. (Error on my part)
Good Luck and Good Boating.+

Just Jed - removed all the gear oil, thankfully oil was clear which was a relief as was not looking forward to replacing seals. I probably drained about 1/3 to 1/2 litre. Yet to replace the oil as will be investing in a thumb pump oil can - I guess if I am not successful with the rubber tube method I could fill from top vent provided enough gap for the air to escape although I could imagine this would be time consuming though, I shall see how it goes. Is marine gear oil pretty standard, any idea what spec I should be after.

Checked out Amazon found seloc manual, not cheap £29.99 + £1.99 as its a "hard to find title", still, money well spent as will be nice to know my way around the engine.

Thanks again for all advice

I use quicksilver gear lube from mercury, you just chop of the end at the width you want (width of bottom hole) then squeeze it in, no need for any extra kit.
You can get it from any marine boat shop.

Cheers
Ross

Re: Manual and Filters - Mariner 60hp

It says on the mercury gear lube tube to change it every 50 hours of salt water running or 100 hours of fresh. For me thats 3 times a year (2 times during the season and then once before winter, kicks in.) It only costs £3.50 for 300ml so its a lot cheaper than a new lower unit.

Cheers
Ross

Re: Manual and Filters - Mariner 60hp

Thanks Ross

Purchased 2 x 300ml tubes and 2 new seals, all went surprisingly well and not too much spillage, but I did only manage to use just less than 1 and 1/2 tubes, but it was overflowing at the vent so guess it must have been enough. I did read elsewhere on this board to expect to use 2 possibly 3 tubes, although that was for a different engine it was a 60hp like mine.

Thanks

In my 1996 60hp mariner bigfoot I use 2 1/2 tubes, but i have a bigfoot engine so the lower unit is the same size as the 70-115 range. I think 1 and 1/2 tubes for your engine sounds fine.
Cheers
Ross
