I've searched the net quite a bit, and through this site, and just looking for specific *opinions* about what type/weight oil to run in my Merc.

It's a 2000 Celebrity 220 Bowrider (22') With a Merc 350 I/O, 300hp EFI; 220 hours. I just bought it a week ago.

Merc recommends their own 25w-40 (non-syn) oil. I would *like* to use a synthetic. Amsoil and Valvoline both offer a 20w-50 full syn, and the previous (only) owner used a 20W-50 marine oil. Amsoil has a Marine specific 0W-40, but that concerns me, how far off from the mfg. recommendation it is... opinions? suggestions? experiences??

If anyone actually *likes* throwing advice at boating newbies, feel free to email me. I'm new to this boat, new to boating, new to trailering - but quite receptive. =)

Thanks,
Chad

Re: Recommended Oil

I think i'm going to try Amsoil 15w-40 for Heavy Duty Diesel/Gas/Marine engines. If it blows some smoke at start-up, or otherwise runs worse, i'll switch back. Anyone specifically think this is a *bad* idea?

Chad

Re: Recommended Oil

I PREFER THE CASTROL 20W50 SEMI-SYNTC.
ALSO DEPENDS OF THE OUT SIDE TEMP OF AREA YOUR ARE USING YOUR BOAT.
FOR EXAMPLE IN FLORIDA, WERE TEMP REACHES MORE THAN 35C°, THE BEST IS 20W-50.
TRY CASTROL....ALMOST THE BEST...

Re: Recommended Oil

I run the amsoil 15/40 and it works great, be sure to use their filter to.

Re: Recommended Oil

I own a Jeep and have spent several years on a major Jeep forum where the debate between synthetic and dino rages constantly. I also know some people who have used synthetics since they came out 20 or so years ago. Nothing I have seen in that time has convinced me that synthetics offer a benefit proportional to their cost, although they may be marginally better than dino. Amsoil in particular seems to be especially costly and requires that you use Amsoil filters, also costly.
