I finally got around to changing my inpeller on my 1979 4.5 Mercury. When I assembled it there wasn't any water coming from the telltale. I was like "$#%#$". So when I took the lower unit off again, I realized that I didn't guide the copper inlet tube into the top of the impeller cover. Works good now :) Anyone attempting to change one should keep an eye on that pesky tube!

Minnow,

I'm having a heck of a time lining the lower unit back up to the leg of my '75 Merc 4.5. Do you have some good insight as to some tricks to use? I've gone step by step in my seloc manual and I still can't get it to fit up right. hits metal to metal about 2 inches from mating back up.

Make sure the driveshaft is going into the motor (it tends to deflect if you move the lower unit the least bit).

Make sure the shifter is in forward so you can turn the prop to line up the driveshaft into the motor.

The tube inlet you will need a bright light and some patience. IT would be easier to help you in person. but I am in Ct :).

As a word of encouragement, I did mine without any sort of manual. I ordered a seloc, but I got tired of waiting for it to arrive, so I just dug in. Good luck!
