Have an '88 Merc 100hp on a 17' Searay and cant figure out the beep alarm. At first, was going off only when we would throttle out of idle. Had the Merc. mechanic come by and tune up, he said tell-tale was fine, oil looked good, and temp seemed good. (Of course it didn't come on for him). Now, after a few more short trips with it coming on near the end, as soon as I turn the key Without even cranking the motor it starts to sound? Any thoughts, bad sensor?

Steady beep or intermittent beeps?

It could be a bad sender but there is a good posibility the wire is grounding out somewhere. I would follow the wire down from the motor and check to see if there is bare wire touching the motor. Good luck.
CU

I guess what I'm going after is whether there could be any engine problem that the sensor could know about prior to starting a cold engine?

No the overheat horn will only sound if the motor is overheating or the unit is malfunctioning. It sounds like it's malfunctioning! Good luck.
CU
