Re: what does a rectifier look like?

doc,
on a 1996 75 hp merc. is that the proper wire configuration.......2 reds, 2 yellows and a gray?

when i pop my cover, i have a silver box that meet the measurents with those wires coming out.
my wires come out of the funky colored goo (which faces down). it is sorta setting by itself up on top on the motor. looks like 2 screws/bolts hold it on.
do i have a combination regulator/rectifier or are those just two common names for the same part?

i have seen many posts were these rectifiers go for under $40, when i look mine up on sites they are around $100.
i stopped at one marine repair joint the other day. she quoted me a price of $39. she then printed me a schematic copy. she circled the item she called a rectifier. it has no wires coming in or out. looks to be about the same size as you described but has 3 screws/bolts thru it.......

yesterday i bought a manual for my motor and it calles her part a terminal block and refers to the part i described as reticfier/regulator

i am more than willing to try to fix this myself but am having a bugger of a time getting accurate info.

signed, seriously confused and frustrated.....lol

Re: what does a rectifier look like?

What is the reason for changing the part ?
Is it that your battery is not charging ?
If so, it's the rectifier/regulator (Converts AC to DC). You can test it for continuity with a multi-tester. If you see a rectifier shown as a part, it will have no wires coming from it, as the wires, are connected from various circuits on the motor TO and from the rectifier.Or they will be supllied in the kit.Don't know much about later 90's Mercs, but if it's a 2 stroke distributerless motor I think that this is the P/N 194-5279..

Re: what does a rectifier look like?

The black should be a ground wire. Make sure you have a good ground. A violage/rectifier for my 50 merc costs $132. The two yellows come from the stator, one red to solenoid, one to to the controls or both to solenoid(mine came with a dual wire at the regulator with one at the other end to attach to the solenoid. The gray is tach.. Hook your new one the same way as your old one.

Jerry
