I have a 1978 mercury black max 150hp.It acts like it wants to engage into reverse but slips out when I give it a little more throttle.I tried to adjust the cable today but havent had it in the water yet to find out if iI did good or not. Would like to know if I should have moved the adjusters to the front of the boat or the back.Thanx in advance

Re: reverse problems

IF you have NO rev all of the sudden its most likely not an adjustment.

Check to see if the Ring nut that retains the Brg carrier is not pushed out.

Too much propshaft endplay will tell you this.

OR

The shifter cam and pin are worn out in the gearcase.

OR

Someone had the gearcase off and did not align the shifter properly when putting it back together.

TMD

Re: reverse problems

It does have reverse if you are out of the water... but the guy I got it from had the lower end off too.Just seems like if there is any pressure on the prop it slips

Re: reverse problems

When it was pushed back up into place its likely that the shifter was not in gear. I generally push them up in REV that way you know you will have both gears and neutral.

Shifter in Rev...Gearcase in Rev

TMD
