I have a mercury 50 1987 and it is hard to start when cold. I put a new bendix on the starter 2 weeks ago and now it is worn down like the other one. Are the two problems connected? Thanks in advance for any response.

Ricky

I would suspect that you may need to replace the flywheel as well as the bendix. It seems to be tearing the new bendix out.

OR..the starter is misaligned.

As for starting...does the starter keep kicking out?

TMD

The starter kicks out and when it gets hot is will not do anything you have to let it cool. I checked the flywheel and there are no teeth missing. also the battery that is on the boat is about 5 years old could the battery not have enough amps to crank it. I charge but it is pretty old.

thanks Ricky

If the Starter is heating up to the point that it stops...either it is drawing too much current...or you are turning it over too long...or you do not have a high enough amp battery.

Do you use the choke when you try to start the engine?

TMD

When you choke it. Are the butterflies FULLY closed ? It is important that they are. I have read on here that Mercs need to be choked hard when cold.
