Re: exhaust gas-telltale

I'm not sure about exaust coming out of your tail tell, but I do have my suspecion about the 15 second delay for a perfect stream of water.
Whenever an outboard motor is started, it takes a few seconds, about 15, for water to circlate throuout the motor until it exits the tail tell.
Maybe the smoke your seeing is what water forces out of the system until it finally exits the tail tell.
Is your tail tell spraying good? If so, and no further problems are present, I wouldnt worry.
Also, about your minor problem with running in low speed. Make sure your carborator adjusting screw is set right.
Make sure there is no air seeping into your fuel line. Sometimes, its good to replace that connector that connects the fuel line to your motor. That thing has a rubber Oring in it that gets dryrotted sometimes causing it not to seal. You can buy these things at wallmart. While your at it, make sure that all connections in your fuel line are tight. Some motors have zip ties instead of screw hose clamps, why,I dont know. I would go ahead and replace those with the screw kind if not already, seal that fuel system up.
Also, heres an easy solution that may fix your problem. Go to NAPA and purchase something called Sea Foam. This is some good stuff. Make sure to buy the aresol can. Take your spark plugs out and spray a good amount in the cylinders. Let set for a couple of hours or over night. Start you motor, and then spray some in your carborators. Then watch all kinds of nasty stuff blow out your exaust. This stuff is a tune up in a can. Use about 1/2 can per 3 tanks of fuel to keep your system cleaned out.Dont worry, this stuff is the best for boat motors and wont hurt anything. :D

Thanks for your reply.I do not have a real steady flow out of my tell-tale (impellor and key were replaced) also exhaust gas and smoke continue to blow out of tell-tale even after water starts flowing. ???

Am I correct that sometimes, certain impellors can be installed backwards. Just a thought.

sounds to me like a problem, an exhaust leak into the cooling system at some place. Could be up in the motor somewhere or maybe a leak around the pump base so that it drawing exhaust (?). Sounds like the water pump is working, but no, I don't think there should be exhaust coming out the tell tale. Out of the exhaust relief holes yes, but not the tell tale.

Brent

Yes impellers can be installed backwards or you turned the crankshaft the wrong way when putting the pump housing back on. Have you considered that you might be mistaking steam and water spray for exhaust? I had an old impeller that wasn't flexible enough to suck water up at midrange RPMs. The engine was getting hot and the little bit of water that was coming up was vaporized into steam which came out of the tell tale...
