Hi New guy here. I have owned my first boat for about a year.I recently had a elec fire,I think started in the engine harness. I replaced the harness form the control box & the harness in the engine. Also replaced the retifier ( since it melted). Also the wires to the stator were melted, I just spliced some new wires on there, since they weren't melted all the way to the stator.
Now I ran it in the driveway for about 1/2 hour, it seems to run ok, charging the battery about 13.6 volts.
But I touched the recitier & it was pretty warm, not hot but very warm to the touch. Is this normal????
Just a little nervous about burning it up again...

Mercury 800 80hp ser# 3310884, I believe it is a 72, has a blue strip around cowling.
Thanks for any info...Ron

Re: rectier is warm

hello
it is normal for a rectifier to be warm. what normally causes rectifier/regulator fires is bad connections.a bad connection will cause a lot of heat
check all battery connections and check the motor plug connection. good luck and keep us posted

Did you happen to connect the batteries backwards.. That's always a good way to start a fire..

I've also seen a fire on an aluminum boat, where they had disconnected the positive side of the battery, and left the battery loose in the boat. When they pulled the boat out on the trailer, the battery slid back and the positive terminal hit a shelf, and grounded itself back through the motor, catching all the rubber on the continuity wires on fire.

Scott..
