I hope this is the right place to post this. I have run cabelas trolling plates twice and both times they have broken and usalley get stuck in the down position. I was afraid of hurting motor 120 mercruiser. do any of you run trolling plates and what type and do you think they put strain on motor or out drive. I really like trolling but do not want to hurt my drive or motor.

Re: Trolling plate

I use the "Happy Troller" brand trolling plate and it seems to work fine. I mean its never broken and I have used it on two different boats. An outboard Mercury in line 6 cyl and a 3.0 I/O mercruser. I don't need it every trip out, just when the wind and current are pushing me to fast even with the throttle at it lowest. It doesn't seem to put to much strain on the motor/drive as long as you follow the mfg. instructions. It almost slows me down to much. I have seen guys cut holes through them to get the speed just perfect. Maybe its time for both of us to invest in a trolling motor and get it over with.

Re: Trolling plate

Thanks for reply that is the next one I was thinking of useing I need the plate because if I do not use motor will load up and stall. I fish havasu a lot and trolling slow seems like the way they get the bigger stripers. I would love to get a kicker motor but that is a little to much right now unless I can figure out how to hide it from my wife. Thanks again
