My on board two bank trolling motor charger is not showing a green light after 24 hours of charging as it usually does. Two of five red lights remain lit on each battery. Water is above plates.
How can I test the system to see if the problem is in the charger or batteries?
Batteries 18 mo. old Charger is 5 years old.

Re: Batteries not charging

Do you have an ammeter gauge on your charger? What is the amperage reading on the gauge when charging? A discharged battery should draw 5 - 10 amps when charging.

Check the voltage across each battery when the charger is charging the batteries.
12V batteries should have 13.5-14V across it
24V batteries should have 27-28V across it. This would indicate an output from your charger.

Re: Batteries not charging

I went to a heavier, shorter extension cord, toped off with distilled water, and banged each corner of each battery with a rubber mallet & recharged. Green light came on about 4 hrs later.

Thanks,
