Getting into the lower unit, what'll I need?

My goal is to replace my impellor, all related gaskets, and reconnect my speedometer.

Water pressure is very low, and the boat likely sat for six months prior to my purchase of it.

The speedometer itself works, but the hose is not connected to anything. Prior to the engine the top falls out of the mass of wires, connected to nothing.

What will I need to purchase from the Mercury dealer? What will I need to connect the speedometer?

Any help is appreciated, any of these outboard repairs are a bit intimidating. Going into it with as much info as possible is helpful. Thanks.

It would help if we knew what motor you are talking about... But it's mainly a bolt and nut removal job.... Getting the lower unit back on will be the toughest part (lining up the shift shafts and getting the drive shaft up into the crank).

something that people seem to miss when doing a water pump, is the w/p base.. If the pump has been over heated, and the base has melted even just a little in the center around the drive shaft, then it is going to cut down on the efficiency of the pump, because it is not giving the proper support to the bottom of the wear plate.

I've seen more melted housings, and bases re-used when people do the w/p job. Melted housings and bases do need to be replaced was well as the impeller, since it's the housing that makes the impeller create it's pumping action.

Scott..

The engine was sold as a 200HP Mercury Outboard. It's probably about an '89. Sounds like I might want to see it done once, just in case.

You can look here and search for "Hoo's yur daddy"
water pump pics (about 22 of them). They show you what to do on a "Yammie" , but the purchase of a manual would be useful for your specific motor.

http://www.myfishingpictures.com/showgallery.php?cat=998&si=Hoo's%20Yur%20Daddy%20&page=2&sort=7&perpage=16&password=&ppuser=&stype=
