When pulled back into reverse it just grinds gears, never goes into gear completely. Forward works fine. I checked linkage it all appears ok. Any suggestions?

How does the dog clutch wear out? The OB only has approx 100 hours on it. Are they expensive?

I also wanted to add that the throttle control doesn't want to go back in the reverse position but goes easily in the forward position.

Before accepting that it's a clutch dog problem, you might have your mechanic check to see if it is not simply a defective shift rod. This was the case, according to my mechanic, with one of my 150s.

Good Luck!

d/c the linkage at the engine and try to shift the engine into rev by pushing the shift actuator by hand.

Check the gear oil for filing or water. Do you live in a location where it gets below 0 deg C?

You might want to check to see if the Brg carrier has been pushed out, this will move the rev gear away from the clutch.

TMD

Re: 1994 135 Merc OB wont shift in reverse

I took the advice of the marine doctor and disconnected the shifter and throttle cables, then moved the linkage back and forth a couple of times to see if it was sticking in reverse and it wasn't. So I reattached the cables and tried it at the quicksilver throttle handle and reverse popped in like their was no problem in the first place. I did this over and over again and it seemed to be ok, but I have yet to water test it. This almost seems to good to be true, all I did was disassemble and reassemble and it works! Any comments or suggestions on what happened?

i had the same problem as you :)

I would start it in the driveway and it would crunch into reverse no worries.. Then i would try it on the water and it would just do grinding sounds and go no where :/

New Dog Clutch and all is good.. What possible is you have had to high idle set on hte motor and when shifting into reverse it wore the clutch down real fast :(
