Water Pump Trouble?

I have an 85 Mariner 150. The other day while running the outboard flat out, the temp alarm went off. I killed the engine, let the engine cool down and ran it back in. Today when I was going to launch it, I noticed that water is spraying out of the exhaust ports. Water is also pumping out where it should. The exhaust seems to be much thicker than it is supposed to be. Is this just a water pump problem? Is the smoke just the becoming steam from the heat?

Thanks

It is possible you have a blown head gasket. If the leak is slow enough it will cause the engine to run rough and smoke as well as not pump water.

A compression test will tell you this for sure.

And of course it would not hurt to take a look at your waterpump.

TMD
