im new to this, i own a mercury 200 1998 outboard, this is the first time i try to fix something on the motor, i was told i had to change the thermostats because they had worn out.So i did this, but when i went to run water through the engine, it blew out one of my hoses because the thermostats wouldnt let any water exit the motor. when i remove the thermostats the engine runs fine. How csn i fix this problem, i dont want to run the motor without the thermostats on. Also, i have water leaking out of that area where the stats are, is that ok?

Re: thermostat issues

what i mean by water not exiting the motor is that theres no water coming out of the pee hole. also, there is an exhaust port underneath the pee hole and the hole where iput the hose to flush out the motor. is there supposed to be water coming out of that when i run the hose?

Jeo, I don't know that it's even physically possible, but it sounds to me like you may have installed the thermostats backwards. The part that looks like a coil spring has to be sticking into the powerhead, otherwise it won't open.

On my 135 Merc, I used some high temp silicone on the threads of the thermostat housing bolts to prevent leakage. So far, so good.

-dd-

If the T stats were correctly installed you need to check the popet(pressure relief valve) valve it should open when pressure reaches a certin PSI in the heads to releave the pessure. You are correct DON'T run with out T stats it will warp your heads with the varience in temp in the heads.

as for water leaking were the stats are NO you need the gasket installed..

Just were do you put the hose for flushing????
The exhaust port should not put out any water except at high speeds on the water or as for instance my 150 dosent have water out the exhaust port in the driveway on muffs but on the water it does..

heck I dont kno Im in the telecom bus......
