Please Help ! To Junk or not to junk ?

I have a 1975 85HP Merc. Have re-built both carbs, including needles, seats,& floats! Have re-built fuel pump & new water pump impellar. Replaced old internal wiring harness with new harness. Compression test,("GOOD", 120 to 125 on all 4 cyl)! Have good blue spark on all cyls!<br />PROBLEM: In tank, motor if idled below 1300RPM, when put in gear will "DIE", however at 1300RPM'S, when put into gear, will fall down to 900RPM'S but will idle in tank? Have taken boat to lake,when started in lake starter seemed to drag as if motor might be out of time,("Good Battery"),but cranked! Will idle at 1300RPM, but when put in gear, "WILL NOT RUN",BOGG'S DOWN & DIE's! Have noticed gas running out of front of bottom carb? At home noticed throttle control seemed stiff,unhooked throttle cable from motor("cable fine"),distributor stiff & hard to turn with hand? Pulled dist.& cleaned old hardened grease, now moves freely. Put back in tank & cranked,still cannot idle below 1300RPM & gas still running out of bottom carb.? ! PLEASE HELP !!!!!! AT WIT'S END !!!

It's OK.... Take your meds.... Looks like the powerhead is OK(good Compression). I think you need to get a manual a redo your "Timing and Syncronization". These two goes hand in hand when getting your motor to idle. Need to get a timing light and check according to manual. Sounds like your idle pickup timing is a little advanced.....or your throttle linkages may be out of adjustment. Any way, these are answered and shown in the manual. I would keep at it because it sounds like something simple. Check it out and Post results.......

gas runnin outa front of carb indicates flooding<br />condition. taks another look at needle/seat/float.<br />good luck,<br />M.Y.

Thanks Bushcat,<br />Already been on "PROZAC" several years! One good thing, I have a seloc repair manual. Thank goodness or I wouldn't have been able to put this thing back together! Next step, I will get a timing light and check the timing and post what I find! THX.

BTW, never just junk a motor. I am giving my headache (1987 Mariner 115) to a mechanic. He will fix it and give me 1/2 what he sells it for. Pretty fair deal considering what I went through trying to get it run right.<br /><br />Good luck with your's. We've all been there I think.
