ok, i finally got my 1997 merc 200 outboard working again. I took it out and it ran fine for about 5-8 hours. Then i notice it slowing down at the high rpm's. I checked it out and it seems that a hose that goes into the engine and comes out right beside the pee hole ruptured. This is the hose that leads to the outside of the motor so u can plug your garden hose into the motor to flush it (i dont know what its called). Any way, it seems that whenever i push the throttle and accelerate, water is pushed through the hose and since its capped off, it cant get out. Thus causing the hose to explode. This has happened two times already i replaced the hose the first time and when i took the boat out again the same thing happened. I want to know why water is being forced through the hose. Is it normal? I dont think it is. How can i fix this???
Jeo

There should be a check valve inside of it to prevent this from happening.

TMD

Jeo,
The only way this can happen is for you to have 2 problems. A previous post indicated there is a check valve on the flush port, this is a correct statement. The first problem is that this check valve must be stuck open allowing pressure into the flush hose. The other problem is that the poppet valve is stuck closed. The valve should open at 1500 RPM and prevents water pressure from exceeding 9PSI. I suggest that you replace the check valve and disassemble and clean the poppet valve, replace if necesary.

BW,

The poppet valve is very easy to replace/clean. Once every year should be plenty of service for that part... The assembly is also cheap in cost, if you are going to look at it you might as well replace the diaphram and gaskets while your at it... The spring and plastic plug should never need replaced, just cleaned. But the grommets that the plug fits into would be good to replace also.
