Yes, it's common practice to pre-fill the filter to prime it the first time. Make sure all the fittings are tight so there are no air leaks, too.

when i first put it in the water it would not even plane out and then cut off.it seemed the more i ran it the better it got.now it will not idle for long and the bulb is soft

Re: fuel water filter

Sounds like an air leak. Check those fittings! Where is bulb placement?

Rick,
Does bulb placement matter? I have a Water seperator on my boat too. I did do the pre-fill method when I replaced mine. My bulb is before the filter. Is this where it should be?

Knightgang

Re: fuel water filter

That's where mine is at, too and it works good. So you have 2 filters on there. The inline and fuel/water seporator? Or more?

You said you "replaced" the fuel/water filter seporator. Did it have one on there before? Flow direction correct? Not really related, but Check your fuel tank vent, too.

Re: fuel water filter

it had a fuel filter already on there.its mounted on the engine itself.its just like a screw on oil filter.the fuel line comes out of back into the bulb and then into the engine.i was just hoping not filling the fuel filter back up could cause this to happen.

Re: fuel water filter

Priming the filter would help on the initial startup and filling of the fuel line to the engine, but once you've got fuel to the engine and the engine is running, previous primings have nothing to do with it. You've got an air leak as some of the others above have suggested. Recheck the filter and connections.

Re: fuel water filter

hello
if you have not done a rebuild on the mechanical pump you may look at that as well, if the pulse pump got a lot of air it could have strecthed or ruptured the diaphram. I understand not pre-filling. if you do it spilss everywhere
I usually fill it with the primer though. and its possible you got some trash in the VST while changeing the filter. I see a lot of the diaphrams get ruptured but double check all your hose for airleaks. the faster the engine turns the better the pulse pump will work.
good luck and keep posting

Re: fuel water filter

So you have double filters? Screw on? Too much restriction!

Re: fuel water filter

Back in the day, I had a 70 hp Mariner ob. Mine started acting up just like yours. I found that the little sediment bulb had gotten too warm and slightly warped where it screwed onto the fitting. You couldn't hardly see it until you took it off and saw it was slightly out-of-round.It was allowing air to suck into the fuel line. Replaced it and the washer and no more problems. PS, before I found it, I took my engine to a repair shop. They told me that it was about a dozen different things that they'd be happy to fix for about $350. I took it home, telling them I'd have to think about it. Just my experience...

Check your new filter, I am thinking the gasket is leaking and you are sucking air. Make sure you coat the seal with a little oil. I alway try to find a replacemnet with the gasket that resembles an "O" ring instead on the flat rubber seal, but either will work.
