I am having a problem with my tilt/trim on my 1989 Mercury 200 HP.

Just replaced motor and rebuilt tilt ram with Quicksilver kit.

Motor trims and tilts up perfect. When you try to lower the motor trim pump runs engine doesn't move. You can place a little weight on lower unit and it lowers but will stop when it hits trim rams. It will not retract from this point no matter how much weight is added.

The system is full of fluid, has been bled (slight froth), and manual release screw is tight. Have also jumped the trim motor directly with 12 volts.

Any ideas. It's about to send me over the edge.

hello
now you will have to buy the factory shop service manual. in it you will find all the needed information. it sounds like possibly the manual release orings or check valve is not seated or dirty. but its all covered in the shop service manual.
good luck and keep posting

There's a good chance that one of your solenoids is shot. I believe you have an and down solenoid on that engine. I'll check my manual when I get home.

Update.

The problem was a bad relief valve on the tilt ram. I was told by Mercury Marine this part is no longer available. I had a spare ram which had a bent shaft so I exchanged the valve.

Thanks for the help
