Because I always have TCW3 oil on hand (24:1 for my '54 Fleetwin and 50:1 for my 2003 90 hp Merc).

I usually use the same oil in my Lawnboy, Weed Eater and Chainsaw.

I'm I doing any damage.

Also, my irrigation pump is a honda. Thought it was a two stroke. Now I'm pretty sure it is a 4 stroke. Running premix in it for two years and still runs great...

Comments?

Are all honda engines 4 strokes. Engine is about 5 years old. Came with the property..

Joe

You won't do any damage by using the TC-W3 oil.....the question I have is the Honda....does it have an oil sump????? They did build some 2-strokes. Is there a valve cover near the sparkplug(s)???

I think you can find a interresting thread on this topic HERE

The outboard oils (tcw-3) do not have the proper additives to provide adequate lubrication of the higher temperature air cooled engines which will result in premature engine failure. 2 stroke oil that is blended for air-cooled used in your water cooled engine will cause excessive carbon buildup which, left untreated will cause premature failure of it. Follow engine manufacturer's recommendations for your air cooled tools.

the answer is yes you are doing DAMAGE!!!!

if the honda has crankcase oil (look for screw in dipstick). I would look into decarbing it before permanent damage occurs.

Re: TCW3 Oil and Non Outboard Applications

This topic came up somewhere else and it stuck in my mind, so while out running around the other day, I read the label on a Penzoil TCW3 container and they said it was ok to use for other things. I also read the oil containers while at WallyMart and they have both types. The oil for Snowmoblies etc, specifically said not to be used in Marine Water cooled engines, so that in itself says something to the differences in the oil.
Personally, I am using Klotz synthetic motorcycle racing oil in my new Husky chainsaw. It is spendy but I think it is worth the xtra $ and one only uses such a small amount. I have a 25 year old Stihl saw that has hundreds of hours of use and I used whatever was available to premix, mostly the old-old(pre-TCW2 & TCW3 OMC outboard oil and it still runs great.
I guess I said all that to say, stay away from TCW3 for weed blowers, saws, etc.

The honda pump does have an oil sump pump. When I bought the cottage, it came with this pump to run the sprinklers from the lake.

Before I knew anything about small engines (outboards and others) I assumed that pump motor was two because it looked like a lawnmower engine.

But I realized last year (did not use it this year at all, sick all summer) that it has crankcase oil.

Should I just put gas in it and go. Tried some other websites for a picture etc, but don't know what model I have...

Tx.

Joe

Owner's Manuals for both Husqvarna and Stihl chain saws specifically warn AGAINST using outboard (TCW-3) oil. It will void the warranty.

I blew up a Poulan saw a few years ago. The dealer told me that it was using TCW-3 oil that caused it to overheat and sieze.

Gonna move this to General Outboard.
