I have recently purchased a Falcon boat powered by a 25 hp mercury. The person that owned it bought it new in 89 and passed away in 94. I bought it from his son who has had it sitting in his yard since that time. It hasn't been cranked, it hasn't been touched. I got the boat at a steal so I couldn't pass it up even if the motor doesn't work. I was wondering if anyone could post a checklist of things I should do to the engine before trying to start it up. I was going to check the carbs and probably replace the water pump but other than that I dont know what else to do. Help.....

Change the lower unit oil.
Clean out the fuel lines.
Replace the fuel pump diaphram.
Replace the fuel filter if it has one.
Spray some fogging oil into the cylinders and crankcase, then let it soak for a while.
Replace the sparkplugs.

That should keep you busy.
Good Luck.

remove plugs and squirt some good lube into the
cylinders and turn the flywheel back and forth by
hand for a while, remove lower unit oil and install
a new water pump kit. carbs are most certainly
varnished up and will need to be rebuilt.
check all wires are in good shape, mix up some
fresh gas/oil and fire her up!
good luck,
M.Y.

Thnx guys for the advice, I wanted a good winter project to keep me busy and from the sounds of it, I have one. Mechanically I can handle most of those things, other than rebuilding the carbs. Thanks again.
