As far as after-market manuals, I prefer the Clymer. As for manuals, the factory manual gets the nod.

c/6
Hooty

I have the Seloc and it is decent. I think cover too many motors for one manual. You always have to read two or three different sections to get the whole story on how to do something. Nothing is easy to find in it. I have the 90 Merc. I6.

Seloc and Clymer give you the basics, but there are some procedures that only make sense in the Merc manual. Seloc and Clymer run about $25.00 each but the Merc manuals can be pricy. The Merc manual for one of my 300hp motors was a little over $300.00 (Maybe they charge $1.00 per horsepower).

$300 for a manual! What were the pages made of, Gold leaf? I paid around $40 for my 2002 Merc. 90 manual -- called Mercury Marine direct.

Yes I like mine alot although the ignition diagnostics are a little vague. It's for an older 40hp and cost me about $35 if memory serves me correctly. The one for your I6 should run about the same.

Good luck!

Experienced wrenches almost always prefer the factory manuals. They understand the terminology and have the tools to follow factory instructions.

I have found that the aftermarket manuals (Seloc and Clymer) are often easier for the casual user to follow for fairly simple maintenance with a more basic set of tools.

It seems odd to me that it is the aftermarket manuals that cover a wide range of models. That is something I would expect the experienced and professionals to want, but they still prefer the factory manuals that usually cover one model, period.

The home wrench who has only one engine to work on often gets better understanding from an aftermarket manual that covers a dozen or more models in addition to his/her baby.

Go figure. :)

"It seems odd to me that it is the aftermarket manuals that cover a wide range of models. The manual for my 40 is not specific to my engine, rather it covers all models 1966 to 1974. I am an experienced wrench (20+ years with dealers)which had a little to do with my decision regarding the manual. I would suspect that IBrokeMyFreakinNeck's engine manual from Mercury will be the same case as mine. The reason I got the Merc manual is as you stated, though, I am used to the format and the contents of the manual. The Seloc and Clymer manuals (I own both) are more oriented towards the do-it-yourselfer, which is why those who aren't used to service manuals prefer them (IMHO). The main issue here is that you own a service manual that is for your engine so the repairs and adjustments are made correctly and you can save some money by not having to see guys like me on a regular basis!

IBrokeMyFreakinNeck - whatever manual looks and works the best for you is the one you should buy. If I could make a suggestion, check with your local library or dealer and take a look at the different manuals out there and make your decision based on your own feelings and comfort level with what you see.

Good Luck!

Dilli
