I have a 1993 150 Merch black max that smokes up the whole marina when i start it and it loads up on slow speeds.I just got this engine at the end of the last boating season. Sold a bigger boat and took this in on trade. I would like to talk to someone who has the same engine.......Thanks

you must be adding to much oil..or your rings have gone out on the exhaust

War Eagle, It is oil injection, and I had a mech. go through the engine and he said it was in real good shape. The gas is fresh as I have ran a few tanks through her. It is a 1993 engine. The engine runs great at high speeds,it is the slow stuff causing the problems.

I am trying to get a list together of things to check out when the weather breaks. I also need the experience of others who have this engine. Thanks

That motor will smoke big time until it gets up to temp. Make sure someone didn't take the thermostats out. Also make sure you have the correct plugs in it. Mine has a strong preference for NGKs

Dingbat: Can you get your engine to troll or go slow enough to go through a no wake zone?

Re: looking someone who owns 150 merc black max

Did you just mount this motor on a boat?
If so check to make sure that you have the throttle linkage set correctly... You may not be able to get it to idle if it's off....

My motor smokes quite a bit also at cold to even warm start-up... That's the nature of the beast IMO... However I believe that your oil injection (if working properly) should compensate for the amount needed at slow speeds (100-1 vs 50-1 at WOT)... You might have it checked! Or you can even disconnect it for a while and run a small tank at 50-1 to see if that makes any difference (it probably won't however).

Also, you can try the synthetic oils, I hear they burn much cleaner and require a slightly less oil to gas ratio. Also get the hotter plugs applicable to your motor that "may" help a bit...

It also won't hurt to clean the carbs... A lot of people swear by using the SeaFoam.. This is an additive that can be added to fuel, as well as a sray version that can go directly into the carbs... This is a place to start to ensure the carbs are not dirty, affecting performance at idle. Everyone who uses it seams to think it makes a great improvement on engine performance. Check them out also to make sure all the bolts are tight and all the leads are connected.

Re: looking someone who owns 150 merc black max

Follow KClosts advice, The synthetics are the only way to go, especialy with these V6s. You will notice a real difference! Go full synthetic, not a blend! Penzoil Matine or Amsoil, (which is my choice)! I really dont think these engines were designed to troll, My 150 Merc really doesnt like to idle real smooth! but if you are going to try it the synthetic is the only way you are not going to fowl plugs! You may have to go to a hotter plug , but if you do , do not rum WOT for very long durations, as you could burn a piston top!

I have a 1988 150 black max. When I go thru a no-wake zone the motor loads up. I have to take it out of gear race the throttle then start again. Sometimes 2 or 3 times in a 500yrd run to open water. What causes this to happen? Mine also smokes but i warm it up at around 1200 rpms to stop tha smoke

I have an 1985 150 merc xr2 Black max and I now pre-mix, I don't have any trouble trolling. It does smoke a bit but that doesn't keep the fish from biteing! I use a little smaller prop when trolling, the motor doesn't have to work quiet as hard with the smaller prop at slow speeds. Good luck.
Cu

--------------------
RUNNING THE MOTOR WHILE LISTENING TO THE HORN WILL MAKE YOU MORN!!

Re: looking someone who owns 150 merc black max

I have a 1993 Black max and it smokes like a freight train, but I don't have a problem at low speeds. yes the injection is still hooked up.

There is a ajustment in the left side as your looking at the back of the motor. Make sure the linkage is installed correctly mine wasent it was installed backwards making it too rich at idle.

What it does is sends more oil at higher rpm. You need to align the marks up in the linkage.

The manual shows what Im talking about.
I run a NGK BU8H spark plug I believe.
But yes it still smokes like a freight train at first and leans out after I run it awile on the water.

Re: looking someone who owns 150 merc black max

BlueBiller,

I have never had any trouble trolling, or no-wake running. But I haven't really trolled for an extended period of time like you do either. But regardless, never had a load-up problem, fouled plugs, etc.
CU2NITE may have a good idea about the prop size.
But I'm running a 4-blade 24P Trophy which is a pretty big prop.

One Question?
After idling for a while have you ever checked the plugs to see if they are fouled? And one question I guess I have is, "what causes a load-up"? That sounds to me like a fuel issue. I'm not an expert, but I'd be interested in those carbs again.....Good Luck and keep us posted...

Re: looking someone who owns 150 merc black max

I have a pair of 1992 black Max Merc 175 outboards on my fishing boat. I can troll all day long on one engine, running at 500 - 1000 rpm. This trolling for extended periods of time, 6 to 8 hrs at a time, never appears to cause any problems. Bump the throttle and away it goes with no hesitation.

When I start my engines up, especially in cold water, they smoke a little untill they warm up. Sometimes they smoke a lot and are actually hard to start, but they always start. I attribute this to the fact that when you shut the engines down, there is still air pressure in the oil system. I think the residual air pressure in the remote oil tank is keeping the entire oil system presureized and pushing oil past the variable oil pump and into the fuel line and carburators.

I try to remember to vent off the residual pressure on the oil tanks by cracking the tank fill lid on the remote tanks as part of putting my boat to rest back in the slip.

Re: looking someone who owns 150 merc black max

Thanks alot guy's for all this info. I have a long list of things to check out when this winter breaks. I get the idea that they all smoke when starting but they will run slow. I did talk to a guy in our fish club that has this engine and he can troll all day-it is on a 23 foot whaler.I'm going to change the plugs, have the oil intake checked. Also the amount of fule that is coming in at slow speeds-air leaks and all that stuff. If you can add anything else that might help me out on this? email me at etinsley6@yahoo.com-----You know I thank you for this help.
I hate to bring up another problem but this boat will troll in a stright line with the kicker-you don't even have to touch the wheel-but with the merch, trolling or slow speed the boat goes all over the place-it is a full time job just to steer the boat....If I lift the prop up to boil the water it is a lot easier to steer. What is going on with this? Thanks again you know it is appricated.......Ed

try checking the trim tab it may be out of alignment.

Re: looking someone who owns 150 merc black max

I would bet the steering problem is in the hull design. The older bayliner would wonder like a snake in the grass, just thier nature I guess. But I would check the trim tab on the motor,(ZINC)by the prop.

Re: looking someone who owns 150 merc black max

I have a 135 XL Black Max 1993 and I have found that if I am running around or below 1200 rpm that if I trim the motor up a bit a lot of load comes off the engine, the RPM increases and the smoking eases up. I suppose there is less hydrodynamic back pressure on the exhaust and the prop is turning just a little bit closer to the water surface. It may just be my engines little way but it may help you too.

Re: looking someone who owns 150 merc black max

I am going to check out different prop sizes. It really paid off on my other boat. I lost a little top speed but it trolled a lot better at more rpm's. I usually drag a sea bag around to keep the rpm's up and that helps a lot also.
