Mercury motor oil problems

1st time boat owner with a 1994 Mercury xR6 2.5 6 cylinder. The low oil light and alarm (this is a combination alarm of temp and oil)stays on constantly. The tanks are full of oil. I have replaced the impeller. My question is: There is what I think to be sensors in each one of the heads. When I disconnect one of them the alarm goes off. What do these sensors do in the heads? Are these temp sensors or oil sensors? To be safe I added oil to the fuel tanks, (after reading this forum.) After doing this my engine ran much smoother. Do you think my fuel injectors are messed up? This boat set for two years. I was told it was fully winterized.I have changed the plugs and sprayed WD 40 in the cylinders, I have also changed the oil in the lower unit. I ran the boat briefly in the lake yesterday and it acted liked it siezed. By the time I pulled the boat home the motor moved freely. I then added oil to the fuel and it is running smooth now. Could I have put to much oil in lower unit? What is the proper oil level for this unit. I was told 22oz, but it trickled out of the top fill hole.
I did not get a owners manual with this boat.

sounds like the auto-oil isn't working?
it can be removed and you can mix the oil
yourself from now on. that way you don't
have to ever worry about not getting oil
and burning up the motor.

Re: Mercury motor oil problems

My approach to these problems would be to take the 2.5 X to the Mercury dealer and have him perform a systems check. Most likely the oil pumps have seized and the sensors are doing their job.

The Mercury dealer would be able to furnish you with an Owners Manual and a Workshop Manual if you desire but at a cost.

I would personally not run this motor with premix since it was designed for oil injection to critical parts and premix is not always perfect for all the speeds and applications. Oil injection curtails fumes also.

Good luck and make friends with the Mercury dealer mechanic. This is a recent vintage motor and should be entertained with a qualified service technician that only the Mercury trained technicians can provide.

That is a temp sender .You have a 2 stroke and as such ,have no oil pressure, only oil level in the indivdual tanks.A constant horn indicates overheat. An panicy BEE BEE BEE BEE etc indicates an oiling failure.Check the operating temp of that head and if it is way different from the other you will need to find out why.Otherwise ,change the sender.

If you must, you certainly can use premix with no problem, but I would recomend getting it repaired correctly and keeping the oil injection on this new of an engine!
