We were working with a newly purchased 98 40 hp 2 stroke mercury this morning and could not get tell-tale flow. Could because the thermostat has not opened, but we were a little concerned just in that we could not find the pee hole. First one I've ever seen that is not obvious as to where it is located (unless it is obvious and we just don't see it). Somebody please tell me where to look.

Hey,
I had the same problem on my 2stroke.I will be on the left side toward the back of the motor. The hole will be very small. On mine it is in frot of a bolt.So try looking closely at it.Also did you crank it up and look to see if it would ****?

Yes, that was the problem. My buddy just bought a used boat with this motor on it and was going to try it out today, but he started it at the house with the hose on it first and it didn't **** at all. He called me over to look at it, and, although I've owned quite a few motors and do most of my own maintenance, I couldn't find where the pee hole was. I've never seen one like that. I'm going back over there to look again based on what you said.

Oh yeah, WAR EAGLE (ME '94)

Follow the waterline under the cowl.

Could be the pee hole hose is plugged.
Or it could be the impeller is shot an not pumping water.
The water should come out of the tell tale whether of not the thermostat opens. Water should flow within 3-5 seconds.
