No faith in Mark 28 AD (1959)

Wife and kids have no faith that this old Merc is going to be reliable for me to take it on the river after I restore it, forget I have restored three old car which run fine. They don't think this old 1959 Merc can be trusted on the Sacramento River current. Assuming I rebuild the carb, fuel pump, and get it to fire up in the run barrel what do you pros think? If I need a back up what do you recommend, a small engine I can also use to troll with. The river runs a good current I have a 16 foot heavy fibre glass fishing boat. My local Merc dealer says he won't work on such an old engine and wants me to buy an new 30 hp Merc for the river! I guess he would, the SS check wont cover that!

You may need a 8 - 9.9 for that 16 footer.

Properly gone through it'll outlast a new one. A paint job ain't gonna restore it though. <br /><br />Make sure you have the manual and go through the fuel, ignition, and check out the lower unit. Run a decarber through it when it's together. <br /><br />Mix is 50/1 TCW-3 oil to gas.<br /><br />-W

Thanks to all, Clams you bet I am going to rebuild the carb, fuel pump, water pump and do all you advise before I paint(can't paint with the temperature in the 30's) I think I will put it all together and test in the barrel first then take it apart and strip and paint it. Do you think this 28 A once tunned is a reliable outboard?
