I have a 20HP(200) 74 Model. Replaced impeller and everything looks ok. Can get water to come through on occasion but mostly a light mist.
Seems to do a little better in water rather than on flusher, however, still not a good flow to make me comfortable. Any ideas?

I'm not sure about the 20hp but the 9.8 has an output tube from the engine that runs to a nipple on the Cowl. If you have one, try blowing some air down this tube when the engine is in a test barrel or bin. You should see the bubbles in the barrel. This will also clear any obsrtuctions. Rather that using the fluser try removing the prop and placing the engine in a test barrel or bin. Start the engine and engage forward gear. Try running the engine at medium throttle. I find that once I do this I get a continious flow even at low idle.

Kev

Re: replaced impeller - still not peeing water

The older small Merc's have a small nylon (plastic) retainer that sits under the powerhead which holds the rubber grommet in place. Under overheated conditions, it often distorts and closes down, restricting the outlet water flow. If you have checked the powerhead for flow, and the tattle-tale tube for flow, then this is most likely your problem. Assuming that the impeller did not break up, there should be no further restrictions in the system. If the impeller broke apart, you need to navigate the cooling system looking for missing parts. Good luck!

Is this plastic retainer on the water tube that comes up from the pump? Also, do these engines have a thermostat? If so, how do you check that?

Thanks
