Hi:

I'm new to the forum and was wondering if anyone could refer me to a qualified boat engine repair mechanic
(and one that is willing to work on old outboard engines like mine, dealers I have called, won't touch it as it is to old for them) for my outboard up around the Inverness,(Citrus County) Florida area. I have a 1965 Mercury outboard, Model 650, 65 HP 4 cylinder, ser # 1803488. I recently purchased it along with the boat, a 1965 Glasspar Avalon and it is original to the boat and would like to keep it that way if possible. I have not had it running, but the former owner said it was running OK when he sold it.

I'm having electrical problems currently, as only 2 cylinders appear to be firing and not sure what it is. I would sure like to get this engine back in top shape and get out on the lake. Any help in finding a reliable person to help would be much appreciated.

Hi Clams:

Would appreciate any help you could give me in steering me towards someone that could help me out with this engine. I'm within about 30 miles of Ocala, Florida if that helps.

Regards,

I got no replies on the other board(s). I'm moving to SC in a month or so to the Lake Greenwood or Lake Keowee area. <shrug>

-W

Rex A. H.

Not sure what your message is? Do you need more information on the engine? The serial # is 1803488 and it is a 1965 Mercury 4 cyl. 65 HP outboard.

Regards,

i know where ocala is but not sure where your area is.you must be north or west.theres a few in the orlando area that work on older merc.its 70$ an hour so could get abit expensive.

i have a 69 glasspar trihull.i still dont know which model it is but i thinks its a cutlas.its hard to find info on them.i did find a site for glasspar boats, you should check it out.

classic glasspar.com

email if you want any info on those mechanics.

rrs815@aol.com

Re: Need qualified mechanic for my 1965 Mercury Outboard

Hi rsharer:

Thanks for the information. Fortunately, my friend is taking my engine apart for me and we are close to getting it back to normal, if there is such a thing for "Mercury" engines. $70. an hour seems a bit heavy as you say. I found a local here in Inverness and he is around $50. per hour, which is still pretty pricey when you can't seem to fix these things in an hour or two. I will keep your e-mail and if I should need someone in the Orlando area I will e-mail you. Thanks again for your help.
