I have a 1988 25 hp mercury, and it keeps dying after about 10-20 seconds. I manually push the choke on the carb about 10 times i can start it and then run for about 10-20 seconds full throttle. It dies like it is out of fuel.
any feed back would be appreciated.

thanks

just guessing but this engine doesn't get used much. Sounds like you have a serious dose of varnish in the carb. A good cleaning and gasket kit will probable do the trick. Good luck

You might verify that you are delivering fuel to the carb without restriction, if so check your float height. Still sounds like a carb problem.

i checked the hose line that connects to the carb and spits a good flow out. i am having trouble of which way my float goes and im sure i have the needle correct rubber point into carb... not sure about my float, it goes the side of the float with the ring on outside sits ontop of float assembly? or does the ring side go up away from the brace the float sits on?

When you prime the fuel system, do you get any over-flow from the carb?

I had a problem on a 30HP Mariner where the float valve wasn't shutting off properly and caused the carb to flood. I discovered it by spotting fuel dripping out the over-flow when priming.
