Hi all, Today I ran my motor in a bucket in the driveway in hopes of having it seaworthy by next weekend and noticed that there was no indicator for quite a while, about a minute, just steam from the peehole, then a splatter of water followed by a good stream of water but a hot one. I could hold my hand in it but if it were any hotter it would hurt. There was no steam after it started peeing. I pulled the t-stat and ran the motor and the indicator was quicker to start peeing and only warm to touch.

History: Water pump impeller was replaced last season by myself. I bought the motor last season and it was missing the thermastat and related gaskets, I installed a new stat and gaskets.

How warm should the indicator water be? Does it sound like I might have a t-stat problem?

Thanks for looking,
Calico

Thats how a t-stat works...it lets the water flow once it gets hot enough....I dont think it was "missing" the t-stat, some models dont have t-stats (like my 8 hp). will it hurt the motor by having one now?...i dont know...thats another topic.

Yes, it was missing the t-stat, along with the o-ring and housing gasket which caused water to run all over inside the engine cover last year. And I believe the indicator should always be flowing as there is a relief bypass that allows a stream with a cold or closed t-stat.

Anyway, I ran it on the lake this weekend and it ran alright, didn't get too hot and gave me a good stream all along. I just thought the stream was hot is all.
