Bought 78 merc 900 last year and just put installed a water-pump kit for the new season. I know little about this stuff.

Question #1-I ran engine for 15 minutes on the muffs at about 1000-1300 rpm and didn't observe any noticeable temperature when touching the head (by the sparkplugs) or the telltale water stream itself. The only place where it was warm at all was on the side of the engine. It was about 40 degrees outside and the tap water was very cold, shouldn't the engine be warmer than this? Should I check the thermostat?

Question 2: the telltale flow is not very forceful (ie. I can stop the flow with my pinky) and is no different from before the pump change. My seloc manual doesn't say much about this. Is there something wrong here? Poppet valve?

Thanking ya'all in advance!

Re: Questions after water pump kit install.

It's always good to check the poppet.... If it's stuck open your water flow out of the tell-tail will be next to nothing at lower rpms...

But,,,,As long as your temps are ok, you should be fine....
But do a check on the stats (if you have them) and the poppet, it's part of routine maintenence....
Good luck...

That motor has no Poppet, nor does it have a thermostat. The water is just constantly flowing. It should only be warm to touch.
