We put our pontoon in today and got a continious alarm. It has bad been winterized and was the first time out for the year. Thought at first it was an oil alarm but read in here to find out it sounds like overheating. The engine is dicharging water through the "pee" hole.Is it possible the problem is "dirtdobbers" ?If not lead me the right way.It is a 2 stoker. :confused:How do i check the thermostat?

Try inserting a piece of wire or long rigid cable tie deep into the pee-hole.(ouch :D ) You may have some dirt that has got through the water tube and motor, but has clogged the pee-er.

It could be your thermostat. Is it a 2 or 4 stroke? On the 4 stroke, you can hook up a hose directly at the point of the pee hole to flush the engine block, this may help in cleaning out your system (Be carefull about the pressure and do not run engine while doing this).

Thanks guys for the information. I need to know sbout the thermostat if anyone could tell me what color wire is causing the alarm and how to check the thermostat with a voltmeter. Is it normally open or normally closed with a resistance check?

What year is your Merc 50 hp? I ask only because the older ones, like my 73, don't have thermostats at all. Maybe the newer ones do. Only way to be sure is to post the serial number and year so you can get the correct answer.

My 96 50hp 4s Mariner (merc) got hot at idle speed and with plenty of water flowing out the telltale. An impeller was the last thing I thought of because the flow was so good...but it WAS the impeller. The impeller is so small on this motor there is NO room for wear. It is exactly the same size as my 3hp OMC impeller! I put them side by side and compared.

I am thinking it is probably the water pump also in my case. Any special procedures you know of when removing the foot? Leave the lever in neutral or what?

catfinder, I don't know what year your motor is, but I think it's alot newer than mine. I have a 1973 500, and a 1966 650. They both "default" to forward, so that is where I put it when I take off the L.U. Hope this helps, Mike

Catfinder,

Get a manual, and check to see what gear everything should be in.. Personally, I don't think it matters as long as both the cable and lower unit remain in the same gear during removal and install.

Neutral or Forward would be my recommendation...

To do a water pump replacement properly, you should get the repair manual for your motor. It will come in handy for the future....
