I bought my first boat! It has a 45 hp Mariner, 2 stroke, 4 cylinder engine. It runs great... on the top 2 cylinders, and doesn't have any spark on the bottom two. I switched out the ignition coils and they are fine. I don't have any experience with outboards. It also delivers just 6 volts to the battery leads when I disconect the battery with the engine running. Are these two problems related?

I need all the help I can get.

Thanx

What year is it? Older models have a distributer, newer models have a "switch box", aka ignition computer.

Hi EMS

I think it is a 1980's model, with a switch box. Can you tell me how to test the trigger? I think that may be faulty.

Thanx

Chances are very likely it is the switch box. If you look at your ignition system diagram, the switch box is the only component common to the each group of 2 cylinders. I just had the same problem with my 6 cylinder engine, 3 running (# 2, 4 and 6), and the other 3 not. It was the switch box.

How about the voltage to the battery? I'm not very familiar with your engine, but I'm interested if that was improved, or was it normal to start with?
6 volts to from the rectifier should have nothing to do with the switchbox.

NEVER disconnect the battery while running, as you will damage the rectifier, and possibly switchbox and other components.
