Went through all of the Merc OEM manual checks for motor with oil alarm while running (remote and motor tanks full, tried bleeding, etc.) Looks like driven gear is not turning when motor is running. This is apparently causing the pump rotor not to turn and generates the alarm. I'm guessing the driven shaft and/or the drive gear on the crankshaft is crapped up. Any good guesses what's happening here?<br /><br />BTW, not interested is disconnecting the oil system.

hello<br /> if you suspect the driven gear also known as the oil pump drive shaft is not rotating its a simple thing to unbolt the pump and remove it then remove the drive shaft catching the washer and magnet and use a flashlight to inspect the drive gear. if its a drive gear failure it will require a complete engine dissasembly to replace it.<br /> good luck and keep posting

Rodbolt, appreciate the feedback. I'm certain no oil is pumping (disconnected the oil discharge line with motor running and there was zero oil).<br /><br />Can the motion sensor prevent the driven shaft or the slotted drive washer from turning?

Well, the latest is the drive gear is trashed (all kinds of metal particles came out on the driven gear.<br /><br />Next question is how to disable the audible alarm for oil? The manual doesn't give enough info to do. Looks like maybe removing the 12v supply (purple lead) from the warning module may do it, but will that disable the hot horn too? <br /><br />As an alternative to premix, what do you think about Marine Solutions aftermarket electronic oil injection?

Pulling the 12 volt lead (purple) will disable the alarming capability and all of the protective functions of the lube alert module. The engine temp alarm (sensor mounted in the head) should still be able to function because this signal is routed directly forward to the engine controls. To test: open the bullet connector on the purple lead, Pull the temp switch out of the head (one bolt), turn ignition switch to ON, heat bottom of temp switch with a cigarette lighter (NO TORCH!), when the switch temp exceeds 240 degrees, touch the base of the switch to any good ground on the engine (ALARM). I know 240 degrees sounds high, but that is how Merc sets them. This switch monitors the metal temp of the head, not the cooling water temp.

I reccomend this anyway.<br /> but the best way to remove the system is to do just that. remove the driven gear,remove all the oil tanks and the alarm modudle. the tan wires should be moved to the terminal block on the stbd side of the engine. if they are routed through the module they may not work if the module is disabled.<br /> good luck and keep posting

Just rec'd Marine Solutions stuff. You need to use resistor plugs - BUZ8H instead of the standard BU8H's. Looks like a simple install, retains the stock oil alarms and the magnetic rotation sensor. Works off tach pulses to vary the speed of the pump drive electric motor and uses the stock oil pump moved to the electric drive motor. The package includes a block-off for the stock oil pump location. All in all, looks well thought out.<br /><br />I'll post how it performs when I get it installed (tomorrow if the weather is OK).

Installed the Marine Solutions electronic oil injection and tested it today ... works exactly as advertised. Have the alarms as original and everything works! I had to trim some of the interior cowl liner to clear the new pump, but otherwise an uneventful installation.
