My manual says that I must buy a special puller to remove the flywheel.

I have a flywheel puler I have been using for years on smaller engines.

Is it ok to use a generic puller or must I buy a mercury puller?????

Bill I don't think a generic puller, like I use on OMC engines can be used.Maybe if you drill and tap ? ? ?
The Merc puller is a good one, works on a lot of models and years, and I'd have to check,is not all that expensive.
DHP it should come with a spacer that goes on top of the crank first

Any puller will work as long as the three bolts line up and you can load the crank with the puller. Load the puller and use a brass hammer on the top of the puller. Nothing special here at all.

I thought he was asking about a Johnson 70 for some reason.

Mercury flywheel puller: I tried to get around using the special puller on a 100 HP six. Nothing but trouble--and no success! As Rodbolt says: "Buy the tool!!"

A local service/parts dealer rents some of the specialty tools. They rent the flywheel puller for about $5.00 a day. That won't do you any good in Miami but you may want to check some of the local Mercury shops to see if they rent the tool.

Re: any tricks to pulling flywheel off 70 hp

my puller can use either 3 bolts or 2 bolts opposite each other, I can only rig it to pull using two bolts opposite each other only. The flywheel has 8 bolts on top around the center nut, What do they hold in place??

I have tried the puller and put a tremendous ammount of pull and the wheel did not break loose.
The wheel does not appear to have a key in it , looks like it is on a splined shaft, is that possible?????

I'm not all that familiar with your 70. I have a 150 merc. I fought the thing as you are trying to pull and tap it off. I went down to the marine dealer and bought the puller. cost me around $60.
15 secs. later the flywheel was off with little effort. Mine also was a splined shaft that will only fit in one location. very easy to re-align.

Bill,The Merc marine puller was designed by them,to do the job.I don't think they did it for profit.
it does pull closer to the center of the flywheel.
DHP

Bill Kubiak, if you are able to put signifigant pressure on the flywheel with the puller you have, use your brass hammer on the side of the flywheel as opposed to the top of the puller. You don't have to get crazy with the hammer but side force will often due when top force does not.

Gonna try my puller it uses two of the bolt holes on either side of the flywheel nut.

There is 8 bolts there, what are they supporting that they need 8 bolts?
