My new (1975 Cobalt Tri-hull) has a knob underneath the steering column. The owner's manual is pretty much worthless. Anyone know what it is for? Thanks!

it locks in your steering in case of trolling or ocean running

The knob is used to either lock the steering wheel from turning or to firm up the steering wheel so it does not turn too easily. My last 2 boats had it and my current boat does not .I never realized that I actually DID use it.Charlie

Thanks, Charlie. I'm new to boating. My wife and I went out a couple of days ago and she kept saying, "How come you have to keep constantly turn the steering wheel?". I think I probably need to tighten the knob down a bit. Thanks.

If you were idling at a slow speed when the wheel required being turned to keep the boat straight, then that is normal. When idling at slow speed the bow is down and will steer the boat which will build a bit of momentum after a while and seem like you need to steer side to side.If this is the case ,it will take a bit of practice to combat it.A boat will not react like a car when you turn the wheel,it takes time for the boat to react.By the time it does react ,you are already turning the wheel the other way to keep the boat straight and so on and so on.What you need to practice is turning the wheel less and waiting longer for it to react. It will seem like it is going too far to one side but if you wait a moment you will see that the boat will come back all by itself.Patience is what you need, and a little practice.Charlie

Thanks, Charie. I think you're right. I'm a little nervous (sometimes alot) trying to pull into our dock (about a 50 foot wide canal). I'm sure it will just take some practice and calmer nerves. I appreciate the insight!

It's for steering "tension". In other words, for the amount of effort to turn the wheel.

Some like the steering tight, others loose.

Not forgetting also that when you turn a car wheel, you see the change in direction at the front immediately.

A boat steers from the rear, so when you change direction a little, it's harder to see, because the bows don't seem to react. You gotta wait.

Easy guide is to keep checking your wake - it soon teaches what's right or wrong for your boat.
