Me being the die hard gear head that I am want a bit more burbble from my boat. I have seen thru hull exhaust, but for the life of me I cant find a "kit" on the net anywhere. Am I just spoiled in automotive most times makes complete kits for these such things. Or am I missing something. A little help for the noob please. A link or a general direction.

Give serious consideration to a switchable system. I've got thru hull as a standard feature on my '88 wellcraft with twin big blocks - yes, it's impressive when I crank it at the dock and watch people jump out of their shoes (and I do have mufflers), but wow can it get annoying for nice relaxed cruising - impossible to hold a conversation.

The boat's out now for some major work and the mechanic wants to convert the system, so I may be getting rid of some rumble.

http://www.corsaperf.com/marine.htm

I'd appreciate it if you did the rest of us a favor and got a system that's reasonably quiet, WITH mufflers....the above system (Corsa...as has been already suggested) is pretty well known for providing all the extra juice you want, without ruining the boating experience for everyone else on the lake who does NOT want you to buy a conventional deafening thru-hull open exhaust.

I would definetly get a muffled system. But at the same time I like a little rummble in my motors. I like the idea of a switchable system. To choose would be nice, espically in the marinas and such. Thanks guys

Depending what you are driving you may not have enough room for capt's call or mufflers. If I was you (and I was) I would go to eBay and get a set of exhaust tips and a couple elbows. Cut my holes, get rid of the "Y" pipe, block off hole in transom plate. Hook up installed tips to manifolds with the elbows. I just hope you have the motor for it. Nothing sound worse then thru hull exhaust from a 6 cylinder.

Not a bad idea F_inscreenname. And I do have a V8, so it should sound fine. Thanks for the idea

f_inscreenname, hows the sound? I thought about doing this with my boat. Buy the elbows, exhaust hose and the tips. The thing is, how loud is it without mufflers? I could not fit mufflers in the space I have available. I wouldn't think its can't be too loud as the exhaust is muffled by the water in the manifolds.

Oh yeah, no straight exhaust on anything with less than six cylinders.

That's the way my Formula is done (twin 350's) Block off transom plate (Merc even has a part number for them), straight up tall risers (a 6" and 3" for a total of 9" before elbow) to elbows to hose to tips right out the transom.

You can kind of make it out here:

If you use mufflers you create back pressure which hurts hp - you actually get a little more hp going out the prop than you do with thru hull (the prop creates a vacuum that sucks the exhaust out)

[edit] here is a good place to get an idea of what's available

http://www.cpperformance.com/

I don't think I have enough room for 9 inch risers. I'm going to check into this again. Ralph, I bet it sounds sweet when you fire that baby up. I have a guy next to me at the marina that has a 4WINNS Liberator with twin 383 strokers. When he fires it up it will rattle your fillings lose.

Well I have 9" because the boat is so deep. You only need enough to get the tips up on the transom and out of the water.

Ya, it sounds really nice but it can get old too...

Hey Ralph, can you get me a better shot of your motors. I cant really see what your talking about there, and I am a total Noob to boats. Cars I know, boats I'm learning.

Re: Thru Hull Exhaust....where to get....what to get

I have a Stringer 800 series. Anyone ever attempted to run thru-exhaust on a Stringer? My concern is that the motor and the drive all move as one when using the trim. The other thing is my manifolds are the types where the risers attach at the back of the manifold. The other thing is, will I need new risers as my risers angle down at about 45 degrees?

Riser....

Looks like I will need a lot on ingenuity to make it work with what I have. I was thinking if I get a set of these risers (see below) I could use rubber exhaust hose and just run it to SS tips out the back. I would think the rubber exhaust hose could handle the flexibility of the engine and drive going up and down while trimming the boat.

OSC50456.jpg

Not sure if these will fit. Looks like they use bolts that go through the top of the riser. Mine bolt on at the bottom of the riser. My plan is to go under the swim deck just above the water line and to use tips with internal flappers to prevent water from getting into the system. Also, I would think this would give it a good sound without it being real loud. I would think going above the swim deck like Ralph, would be pretty loud without mufflers. I would use mufflers but don’t think I have enough room for them. Going above the swim deck would be a lot easier. Ralph, how loud is your boat? I realize you have dual engines but is the sound overwhelming? I mean, can you still carry on a conversation?

Any thoughts?

Do a search on Gil Power Tips and check these tailpipes out, I have installed a pair in my boat, these tips have a a small muffler that is about 2 inches thick and about 6 inches in diameter and the pipes are 4 inch, and there all on piece so they will fit in tight spaces plus they sound great

Yes Dave they have been replaced. Just trying to get a test drive in before all the parts arrived.
Sorry about the late reply. Been out of town.
