Thanks

Who has the cheapest parts/rebuild kits?

Richard :)

it's not that big, it had the top piston gone bad by overheating, and it was the cooling, so I'm rebuilding it completely and just wanted to know the year to order parts!

Because it's kinda my first rebuild on an outboard I just wanted to know what else to look for/rebuild while having the whole engine apart!!

Richard

I think you may find it to be too expensive to re-build. By the time you buy pistons, rings etc. You would be better off buying a good used same motor and keeping yours for parts. Things like stator, flywheel, trigger, starter and switchboxes are VERY expensive and a good parts motor is priceless. Here in Australia, S/H outboards are still sold at a high price, but over there in USA they are giving them away. For $1000 AUS about $700 US we could only get a small 6-10hp motor used and anything bigger is about $2000-5000.
Here is an example
MERCURY 200HP 1986, black max oil injected, complete with controls & guage, still on boat, any test welcome, first to see will buy, EC $5,350ono

Re: What year is my 70HP mercury

well I found a rebuild kit with pistons gaskets and all seals for $500 and I can't find a new or used or rebuild engine for that money anywhere! Rebuilding in a shop is about $1700 so I'm saving a lot of money here, just wondering what else I need to be looking for to fix while having the engine apart, and yes I do have it apart at this moment, just looked for the year to order the right rebuild kit!

The engine looks in pretty good shape except for the pistons ofcourse, so a rebuild it's gonna be.

If you are in the USA near Dothan, AL I'll rebuild your engine for $350+parts. I'm just having fun doing it!

Richard

Hi Richard, I'm your neighbor John from Mobile Alabama. I think I would like to find a couple motors that someone is throwing away and try my hand at rebuilding one or two also.

Hey John, that's what I'm doing! Almost neighbors, well at least you have lots of water there in Mobile, I have to drive half an hour to find some!

Richard

Rperre

Your choice.. and I hope it works for you.
Most of us on here don't have workshop tools like honing devices, ring compressor, tension wrench and complete knowledge of the re-build process and a $500 rebuild kit could be throwing good money after bad. ZMoz is still deciding which way to go with his 140 inline for the same reasons.
If you re-build and don't know what you are doing you will only end up with more damage and costs, but you are obviously mechanically competent.

I don't have a honing device either (maybe soon though), they have machine shops that will do it for me! and the other stuff is all pretty standard, I only needed 4 wrenches to take the whole thing apart! You really can't go that bad with a rebuild, it's all pretty straight forward, but yeah if you're afraid of loosing the money or the engine, DON'T DO IT or if you don't have the mechanical knowledge.

I just have fun doing it and learning even more while doing it, engine's like these are not that difficult!

Richard
