1974 50 hp Mercury can removing the prop cause problems?

I removed my prop and been having shifting trouble. Could I have knocked something out of place?

Removing the prop could not have affected the shifting unless you have other lower unit issues (loose rear carrier, missing spanner nut, etc.?). Did you remove the lower unit from the motor? Have you removed the motor from the boat resulting in the cables being misadjusted?<br />- Scott

no i have never removed the LU only the prop. i cant even get the engine running now, it seems to be in gear while im trying to start the engine ,its barely turning over. this all happened when i changed my prop. I am confused !
