Hi guys and gals,

I'm new to the whole owning a boat thing, so please be gentle.

I have a Shakespeare 17ft boat with a Mariner 75hp. I'm not too sure of the year, or where abouts on the engine I can find this. But my problem lies in the electric trim/tilt!

At the end of the season last year, my brother used the boat and put it away - promising that it was all rinsed out. But now, when I try to trim and tilt the engine I can hear a clicking noise from what I guess are the solenoids, but no movement in the engine :( :( :( ...

Please, please help... England is having a bit of hot weather and I can't wait to get out on the water... :D

that is the solinoids working.
Have you checked to see if the battery is fully charged? also try lightly tapping the tilt motor to see if maby the brushes are stuck?
You should als try searching this fourm for other posts, there are plenty of folks who have had this problem before.

you need to measure the voltage across the two wires going to the trim motor to see if you are getting 12 volts to it in both positions. you could have one solenoid bad.

Dis the two wires going to the trim motor and with a set of jump leads shove 12v down them, polarity unimportant, it should go one way or the other, if not you have a problem with the pump motor..

Good Luck... Keith... ;)

Hi Guys,

Well, we took the actual trim/tilt motor off and opened it up - only to find that it must of sprung a leak. The Salt water had got in and completely sealed it all up! Nightmare..

So, we bought a new motor and have since installed it. The trouble now is that we can make it go up using the switch, but cannot make it come down, without shorting out the solenoid and bringing it down that way!! AARRGGHH...

Anyone got any suggestions!? Thanks for all your help by the way... :)

Bad Down Solenoid. To verify this just swap the two.

If the solenoid is not clicking in the down side it sounds like you have a broken wire from the rocker switch on your remote, there is three wires that go to this switch and you can get to them by pinging off the cover on your throttle lever. Best of luck..Keith..

I had the same problem... Down worked fine, UP was bad. I had a boat place fix it for me. The part was $30.00 but the labor was $75.00 x 3 hours of labor... do the math. It was pricey, but solenoid was hard to get to on my boat. It's all fixed now and I am happy!!!

Clicking usually means a bad solenoid.
