Hey I have a 70hp mercury from 1978 and just rebuild the whole thing.

This was already happening before the rebuild but it's still doing it:

there is water coming out of a hole next to the #1 spark plug and it almost looks like the head cover leaks, but it's just this hole! can anybody tell me what this hole is for, and can I just plug it (it has thread in it)? or should it be like this?

Richard

Re: water out of head cover???

Richard, Those motors had a threaded elbow that attached to the tell tale water outlet. Is this the hole you refer to (1/8" NPT)? Also, my '77 inline 6 merc had a brass plug on the head water jacket in addition to the tell tale outlet fitting.

It's for a water pressure gauge. Between cyl 1 and 2.
Just carefully remove it and add some teflon thread tape or replace it.

Re: water out of head cover???

hey thanks for the reply's

There is no water pressure gauge in there on this 1978 or it's missing!

It could be the tell tale outlet and the elbow is just missing, can I just make my own tell tale by putting a fitting in there and T it into the oter (bottom) tell tale (this one come's out of the fuel pump)! Do I need two tell tales? or is one enough?

BTW this is the hole I'm talking about on the #1 cylinder!
Re: water out of head cover???

Are you sure the water is coming from the hole and not from gasketed area around the sparkplug hole. My inline six used to leak between the head and the cover on number 2 hole. It turned out to be a warped water cover. A new gasket would last about 3 months. New cover cured the problem. Install the gasket dry, don't use any sealer on it cause it will allow the gasket to slide around when the engine warms up.

I'm sure it's coming from the hole next to the #1 cylinder, but I will install a new gasket again after the break in period!

Richard

Re: water out of head cover???

I thought my 50HP Merc was leaking from that hole too. I put a screw in the hole and that convinced me that it was actually leaking from the gasket around the plug. I took some RTV I had and gunked up the area, it slowed down the leaking and I plan to do the new gasket soon.

Does anyone use RTV for these gaskets or do I get a cork style gasket from the dealer?
