Stator and switch box?

I posted a couple of weeks back indicating that my 1980 70Hp was having problems starting. Well it finally packed it in completly. My usually mechanic was busy so I took it to someone I have never worked with before. When I called him to get an update on the situation he told me that he replaced both the stator and the switch box?

He said that once the stator goes it usually takes the switch box with it. Is this right?

Everything runs great but that was one expensive trip!

I guss anything's possible, but I always ask the tech to call me with how much it's going to cost before he does the work.

Jerry

Your mechanic is correct. On occasion a bad stator can take out your switchbox. You want to make sure that the stator isn't messed up before replacing a faulty switchbox, or you could possibly be looking at another expensive switchbox.

Re: Stator and switch box?

Thanks for the feed back guys.

I agree Jerry he should have called me, he didn't I made this clear to him that that was unaccepable.

Is there any way to check a switch box?

The stator was definitely bad, it had a crack on it. I was just a little concerned when I called him and he had already replaced both. Now all that being said, he did give me a good deal. Replacing both was $400 Canadian $.

I have since sold the boat to a new happy owner!

Re: Stator and switch box?

He probably replaced the bad stator, then had the correct readings to the switch box,and knew it too was bad.I would have called you before the stator replacement, and told you it was at LEAST a bad stator.
If the stator doesn't supply the switch box with power,no spark. If the trigger doesn't tell the switch box to fire no spark. If trigger and stator are ok...switch box is bad.
This after doing the usual tests.
I too have gotten carried away with fixing a difficult problem, and failed to keep a customer up to date.It happens.
$400.00 US or Canadien is a good price. He gave you a break.
DHP

Re: Stator and switch box?

I am really missing something here. How can a stator mess up a switch box? At least in my 1968 500 mercury motor this would be impossible since my stator is connected to the rectifier and only the rectifier. Some technical information please???
