The last two days I've been testing this 20hp Merc out that my brother is considering buying. It's not new, probably early 80's if I had to guess, but this thing has run flawlessly since I've put it on my boat. I used to be a die-hard OMC person, but this motor has really impressed the heck out of me.

I'm gonna have to get the serial number to see what year it is.

I told him that I wouldn't hesitate to buy it, it's a damn good motor. :)

Even Mercury hits a home run now and then. Their overall batting average is kinda low, though. But I shouldn't complain. They keep my kids fed, if you know what I mean.

You'll find the Merc a lot easier to service than a Johnrude too.

Chris.........

Merc makes a fine product. You'll find most people that have bad things to say about them either know little about them, repair countless outboards for people who know little about them, or have an irrational bias against them based on litle more than liking whatever other brand more. Me, I have had some motors under my belt, and fixed many more for other people, and mercs are in the minority of those needing repair. I like Johnyrudes, they are a good motor as well, but in my area at least, a vast percentage of boats in the repair yards have johnyrudes dangling off of the transom (and who can forget Force, but I don't see that many of them around here). Anyway, get yourself a Merc and you'll never look back...

Outboards are like a lot of things, whatever make they are, if you take good care of them they will give you long and good service, of course there are always exceptions to the rule where some motors do need that little extra TLC
